Himself came home from a 48 hour shift and put new marker lights in my car and cut the extra wood posts off the garden beds today. He is the inventor, builder, fixer and all around make it happen guy! I would not have half of the nice gardens that we do without him. Nor would i have even half of it planted now.
It is supposed to freeze again tonight, frost warnings blaring out like foghorns, (or icehorns? are there icehorns?) So the tomatoes and peppers are all covered up, actually, the primary tomato/pepper bed stayed under plastic all day today, it was nice and warm and damp in there, hoping that it gives them a little jump start. Tomorrow is supposed to rain. Covered over the more hardy plants and those that don't really lend themselves to greenhousing yet with upended pots.
I do think that by the time next year rolls around we will have devised covers for at least a number of the beds, just that drape of plastic seriously improves the temperature and i think with something easy to use we should be able to extend the season significantly. would also like to try extending further into the fall this year, at least with some later plantings of cool veggies. I am thinking of some lettuces, some kale or other brassica, carrots. Wondering how far i can extend for the warmer ones. It is going to be really exciting to play with the beds now.
Today i got the corn planted into the back Three Sisters test garden. i also planted some of the pumpkins. I need to get some seed for another squash or more pumpkins. I am thinking some winter squash probably though. Will wait for the corn to come up and then plant the pole beans. I am impatient and can barely wait for the corn to come up lol. So impatient in fact, that i planted six squares of the burgundy bush beans in the front garden box with the corn that hasn't come up yet.
Today i also planted some summer savory in a pot. planted some sage in a pot and in some of the beds out front since my faithful old sage friend is clearly approaching his end and i probably didn't take rootings soon enough, there is just one living vibrant branch left. I planted The rainbow carrots in one of the C-beds. Added some additional seed to the already established beds of lettuce/chard/etc to let them fill in a bit staggered.
Noticed today that all of the jack-o-lantern pumpkins seem to be coming up well, but so far i seem to have just one of the triple treat. They are on opposite sides of the bed so i will give them a few days in case it is a soil temperature difference and then i will try possibly replanting with a different varietal. The sunflowers are still absolutely wild in the front bed, they are cropping up in the back beds now as well. Not sure if that is
due to birds or if they managed to get in there some other way but i am pulling them up rather ruthlessly.
the hops are, of course, amazing! some of them are nearly as tall as me already. One plant appears to have taken a little frost damage but it has new shoots and i am confident that it will be fine. Truly amazing plants!
I need to pick up some plants, want to show the kid that she can grow food even in the small space that she has. I have a few more things to plant still. And i really need to pick up additional hot pepper plants. I would like to pick up some watermelon seed also to grow along with the cantaloupes.
